What to record
- Room-by-room photographs or video
- Make, model and serial numbers for major items
- Receipts or ownership records where available
- Approximate purchase dates
- Secure backup storage away from the property
After a loss
- Do not discard items until documented and authorized where practical
- Photograph groups and individual high-value items
- Record condition and location
- Separate emergency salvage from final disposition
- Keep communication and claim reference records
Property conditions vary
This guide is general information. Active damage, visible mould, smoke residue, electrical concerns or unsafe conditions require a site-specific assessment.
