Before freezing weather
- Insulate vulnerable pipes where appropriate
- Maintain heat in occupied and vacant areas
- Know the water shutoff location
- Inspect roof drainage and exterior openings
- Prepare for power interruptions
During thaw and snowmelt
- Watch foundation areas and window wells
- Move snow away from vulnerable openings where practical
- Check ceilings and exterior walls for new staining
- Inspect basements and mechanical rooms
- Respond quickly to musty odour or visible moisture
